Backyard Riparian Buffers

A backyard buffer enhances fish and wildlife habitat, and is a beautiful addition to any landscape.

Riparian buffers are strips of grass, shrubs, and trees along the banks of rivers and streams that:

act as filters of pollutants and nutrients that would otherwise wash into our streams.

keep stream banks and streambeds stabilized, resulting in less flood damage and healthier salmonid spawning habitat.

provide shade, keeping water cooler. Salmon and trout rely on cold water for survival.

provide good homes and safe corridors for wildlife.

Many landowners are reluctant to install riparian buffers. Some are concerned that the buffer will obstuct their view of the river, while others are worried that the riparian buffer will be difficult to maintian.

Mid-Columbia Fisheries and our partners may have funding available to assist homeowners in the instillation of riparian buffers. Please contact us for more information.

Brochures

The brochures below, available for download in .pdf format  include planting plans and native plants lists that allow for easy access to the stream, good views, and minimal maintenance after the first few years. The brochures were created through a Community Salmon Fund grant specific to the Yakima Basin, but concepts are applicable anywhere. Please click on area of interest!

Good Buffers Make Good Neighbors

Mid-Columbia Fisheries is partnering with Futurewise and local organizations to educate the Tri Cities Community in eastern Washington about the importance of shoreline buffers and riparian zones to water quality and how they work to create critical habitat for fisheries and other native species.
The project will involve a multi-pronged equity-driven educational approach, acknowledging the history of our tribal partners in salmon recovery, including planting a riparian demonstration site in the Tri-Cities, direct mailings to nearby property owners, social media, virtual open houses and events.
